Identify some of the following people in your life:
A grandparent, or someone of your grandparent’s generation that you know moderately well;
A friend or peer of yours who is of the opposite sex or a different gender identification than you;
A friend or family member who doesn’t live in the same country as you;
Someone at least ten years younger than you.
Now look at the following short videos, and try to imagine watching these videos through these people’s eyes. How do you think they would react? How do you feel about it? Discuss a few key ideas in your portfolio. How does age, gender and location change our perceptions and values?
A grandparent, or someone of your grandparent’s generation that you know moderately well:
The person I have chosen would be my grandmother. She originates from the Netherlands and only immigrated in the mid-2000s. She is in her early 80s.

I believe, while not interested in the sport, she would not see a problem with it being performed in an Indigenous language, while also performing it in another language. This would most likely been influenced by her perspective of seeing a relatively modern teaching of Australian history, being a late immigrant.

I believe that my grandmother would be, at least, positive on the video. However, I do think should approach the subject of self-care to be personal (at most between tight family and a medical professional). I believe she would be engaged by Jonathan Van Ness.
RobertHoge
I 100% believe that she would agree with the core message of this video. She believes that everyone is different in their own ways. I do think she would listen to Robert Hoge, but she might look down on him in a way. In the way that, oh poor him for having to grow up in that manner and go through everything they have. I think both of these are influenced by the time period of where she grew up (for her thoughts on Robert Hoge) and the country she grew up in/her family that she grew up with (for her thoughts on the topic).
A friend or peer of yours who is of the opposite sex or a different gender identification than you:
I would have to go with (for the purposes of this exercise) a person named Rose. She has grown up in a different state then I and in a, from what I’ve been told, very different financial situation. She is roughly in her mid-20s.

I believe she wouldn’t have a problem with this, but I don’t believe she would view this as positive either. Perhaps I could believe that she would see this as interested, having spoken in another language, but that’s as far as the interested would go. From what I’ve seen, she isn’t interested in the sport as well.
Sip & Share: Jonathan Van Ness on Self-Care, His Morning Routine, and More
I believe she would approach the topic of self-care with a bit of scepticism, at least this form of it. On a more general note, I believe would be positive on self-care. On the topic of Jonathan Van Ness, I believe she wouldn’t have a positive or negative view on them, but I don’t believe she would go to this person for self-care.
RobertHoge
I believe that she would at the very least understand and respect the message. On Robert Hoge, I think she would take it as another person from her youth who comes into a school to share a message. I don’t necessarily believe this would be a positive or negative view on the person.
A friend or family member who doesn’t live in the same country as you:
This one was tricky, as I haven’t met them in quite some time. With that being said, the person I have chosen is a man and lives in the Netherlands. They are roughly 50 years old.

This one was tricky. I don’t believe that he would consider the use of an Indigenous language version of the anthem a negative thing. But that would be as far as it would go, and he would believe that an English version should always be played alongside it.

On just the topic of self-care, I believe that as long as you have something that works for you and doesn’t influence others, it’s fine. However, I do not believe that he would have a particularly positive view on Jonathan Van Ness. I don’t think he would say anything about Jonathan Van Ness, but he would think that they should not be expressing themselves in the manner they do, or at least not as publicly as they do.
RobertHoge
I believe that he would approach the video quite positively. While he would not relate to the exact problems of the video, he could relate to them with his own. I believe he would also think that the person has done well to overcome the problems that he has faced.
Someone at least ten years younger than you:
The person I have chosen is my 5-year-old half nephew. He was born in the country to my half-brother and has been living with that family for the entirety of that time.
Australia’s rugby union team the Wallabies sing anthem in Indigenous language for first time
I’m not 100% sure on how the family interacts with the sport, but I do not believe my nephew would be that interested in the sport, at least at this stage. In saying that, I do believe that he would treat the anthem sung in an Indigenous language the same way as he would if it was only spoken in the English language, bored. The only way I would think that he would have a different reaction would be based upon the reaction of his parents as otherwise he would not have learnt about Australian history which could influence his reaction.
Sip & Share: Jonathan Van Ness on Self-Care, His Morning Routine, and More
Since he is quite young, I do not believe he has engaged with many topic of self-care outside of what would be in the current children’s media. I believe he would be engaged by Jonathan Van Ness.
RobertHoge
I believe he would be curious on the way that Robert Hoge appears and ask plenty of questions. But I do not believe that any of that would come from a place of maliciousness. On the topic of the message that Robert Hoge is sharing, I feel as though, considered how he has grown up so far, he would not currently resonate with it. This is unless other media that he has watched has influenced him. I believe his parents would have an influence, but I’m not 100% sure on how it would have influenced him.
My thoughts:
I’m a 20-year-old male and I’m studying a Bachelor of Film and Screen Production. I’ve always lived in Australia and haven’t been even out of state since 2010. Of course, I have been influenced by a great many things in my life, from parents and other family members to education and even the media I grew up with.
Australia’s rugby union team the Wallabies sing anthem in Indigenous language for first time
I’m not interested in the sport of rugby, or in many sports for that matter. However, I do find the use of an Indigenous language version of the anthem to be a good thing. I believe it would allow for more people to potentially connect with the anthem.

This was actual quite the good video for me. I have dealt with lack of self-care at times and, even with how short it was, I believe it gave quite good advice. Jonathan Van Ness, as person, seems to be quite engaging and I would love to learn more from him.
RobertHoge
In my opinion, the message of this video is quite good. I interpreted it as; you are who you are and that is ok. I also resonated with the idea that while this element of you is this, in the case of the video his appearance, you are also all of these other things. My general feelings on this topic would have been influenced more generally by the media that I grew up on, not on the guidance of others in the close family.
