In the first week of this class, you composed a personal definition of ‘cultural safety’. Write a new blog post and copy and paste that definition. Write a short paragraph reflection on that definition, and whether it would change or morph depending on the material we’ve discussed over the last few weeks.
Week 1.
Cultural safety is having a considered environment that allows for different cultures to be accepted and unhidden. To have cultural safety means that having a different culture isn’t looked down upon, but instead seen for the positive it is.
Reflection.
From the work that has been completed, I believe the core definition would remain with most of the language intact. Most of the language is phrased in a way that I believe the newer material supports. However, one element of the definition that would be changed is the use of cultures as the focus for the definition. While I believed culture was the right word at the time, a broad word/definition should be used to better reflect cultural safety. One example of the change would be “…allows for ways of existing in the world that are different from one’s own to be…” Another example of a change could be “…way of living from is different from one’s own way of living isn’t looked…”. This change would better reflect the broadness of cultural safety and is intended to evaluate othering.
