What does this say about multiculturalism?
The piece brings attention to many elements of multiculturalism. One primary element is that multiculturism itself can be held partially responsible for the lack of understanding and learning about indigenous Australians. It is described that other cultures can be domineering over the culture of indigenous Australians being, “…shadowed by the more dominate cultures…” (Tran, 2020). The piece also explores how while indigenous Australian culture was taught and a young age, later stages of education left it unexplored. To rephrase this, other cultures are given focus in Australian multiculturalism, from the perspective of the video, over the culture that indigenous Australians have, and it is relegated to be shown as a footnote in early learning.
What does this say about cultural diversity?
The piece makes note that cultural diversity is about having a diversity of cultures. The piece shows that, from its perspective, that the culture of indigenous Australians is being sidelined. The video shows that even though, focus is still given to a single culture instead of equal representation of multiple cultures. Specifically, as mentioned before, the video makes specific mention of select cultural events being put on, but not others (in this case, indigenous Australian cultural events).
On reflection what are your thoughts about the relationship between multiculturalism and First Nation culture.
In my opinion, the relationship is a balancing act that is currently unbalanced. Australia still has work to do with multiculturalism from what I have seen in my own life. However, it generally given more care and attention then what First Nations culture receives. It should be noted that this is based on my own experiences and what I have learnt from the material. To be truly multicultural, this balancing act must become balanced. More than lip service in early learning classrooms must be paid to all cultures that are present.
