SCA2001 – Week 10 – Exercise 1

What spaces could you occupy and it would be considered an act of resistance? Does this spark anything in your imagination in regards to your artwork?

Because of whom I am, I have not entered into many spaces where I would face or feel resistance, that I have noticed. However, that is not to say I haven’t felt uncomfortable being in a space. It should be noted I’m not stating that what I faced is the same as a person facing resistance because they have a disability or are facing resistance for other more serious reasons. When I was younger, I enrolled into specific multiday art workshops to further my skills and hopefully gain connections with other people. While I was there, I felt that I was a fish out of water in comparison to the other students. My work, compared to theirs, was simple and it lacked skill. This caused feelings of imposter syndrome and inadequacy. It should be noted that this resistance was purely coming from myself. The other students and teachers were always kind and supportive. However, this didn’t stop the feelings from emerging. This become present in some of the work I produced. When writing for a project for university, the main character had to deal with a monster that was a personification of those feelings. It should be noted that the character in the film didn’t defeat the monster, simply managed to move past it till the end of the project.
