Week 2 – Activity 1

  1. Is it reasonable to expect a state theatre company to program First Nations-centred work? If so, why?

It is absolutely reasonable to expect a state theatre company to program First Nations-centred work as it helps to shed light on their culture and provide a space for it to be celebrated and encouraged.

  • Is it reasonable to place the same level of expectation on smaller arts companies, like independent artists?

I believe it’s reasonable to a certain extent to place the same level of expectations on smaller arts companies as they need to understand the negative impacts failing to do so could cause.

  • As an artist about to emerge into the professional field, what expectations do you place on yourself in terms of intersecting with First Nations artists and audiences?

I need to ensure that I am doing everything I can to remain respectful and conscious of my decisions when working in my field. First Nations peoples have a rich and wonderful history in Australia, and it needs to be understood and showcased for all to see, and I need to do all that I can to accommodate that.

  • Lewis apologised. Was the public apology enough? If you were working for the company, what would you advise as the correct course of action moving forward?

I believe an apology without action and change is essentially meaningless. I would probably contact First Nations artists and collaborate with them on different ways in which the company could better facilitate their art and become more inclusive.
