Who is an artist working in your field that has a disability? What language do you notice they use in talking about their disability? Does the language that the media use around them differ from that language?
A person in the field that I aspire to be in, is a tetraplegic (has no use of limbs below neck). This person, despite their disability remains incredibly positive about their life and doesn’t let the disability stop them from achieving what they want to achieve. “For disabilities, some of them can’t be fixed, some of them you just gotta maybe ignore it somewhat. There’s people like me out there and people like me have fun and can do what people can do, just gotta find a way around it”. There is a documentary online that highlights this person’s life and disability, and the language the documentary has used is incredibly similar to that of the person.
To the extent that you feel comfortable sharing publicly, what is your experience of disability? How might this affect the art that you want to create, or the people you seek to work with?
I myself do not have any experience with disability but do encounter people with disabilities at my place of work. This will affect the art that I will create as I understand how to be more inclusive, understanding and patient when working with and around people with disabilities.
