After watching Dylan Alcott’s Acceptance Speech, I notice that he starts by making a light-hearted joke to try and make himself and the audience more comfortable. He then immediately acknowledges and pays respect to the traditional owners of the land. I notice that Dylan is extremely humble and doesn’t believe he deserves this award as much as the other nominees.
He states that he used to hate his disability and that fact that he is disabled. Growing up he never saw anyone like him, and when he did, it was always portrayed negatively as if the persons’ life was over.
By Dylan winning Australian of the Year, it paves the way for younger generations that live with a disability to strive for greatness and not have to feel as though they can’t achieve everything they set out to achieve.
