Week 7 – Activity 1

Tran’s video acknowledges the area he lives in and how it is a multicultural area. He does notice however, that the representation for First Nations peoples is quite low compared to the other cultures residing in the area. Tran states in his video that ‘the groups that make up the bigger numbers, will overshadow the group with the smaller numbers”, and as his community has a much larger number of Vietnamese residents, the Indigenous Australian’s and their culture are often overlooked and overshadowed, which is often the case when it comes to cultural diversity in the community.

As Tran says in his video, he was taught a lot about Indigenous culture when in primary school but can’t remember being taught or shown anything when in high school or even once he left school. This says a lot about how the indigenous culture can quickly become lost and ‘forgotten’ when not talked about or properly represented in the community. I think that all cultures should receive equal and fair representation within communities regardless of their size.
