Cultural safety is all about creating a place that is safe and welcoming for all cultures. Cultural safety is about providing a safe place to share history and knowledge with everyone about different cultures and ensuring that it is a judgement free space.
I believe this was quite a broad definition regarding ‘cultural safety’, yet I believe that is still applies and covers everything we’ve spoken about in this course. This course has definitely provided more insight on the topics of inclusivity not only to different cultures but to the LGBTIQA+ community as well. Understanding more about how different cultures and communities work will definitely reflect in my artistic practices as I have the knowledge to remain inclusive.
I think my definition of cultural responsibility remains strong. All peoples and cultures should be respected and included in everything we do.
I stand strong with my thoughts and definition of Cultural Safety and believe that it covers the basis for everything I have learned this semester. I have no problems or quarrels or qualms about any culture or community and would be honoured and proud to work alongside anyone. I understand that it’s not always easy for people when there are so clearly ‘insider’ and ‘outsider’ groups and I strive to remain inclusive and remove any form of those groups. I enjoyed learning more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Culture, as well as the LGBTIQA+ community and I feel as though it has helped me to understand the kind of artist and person that I want to be.
I want to create a space (physically and metaphorically), that is safe and welcoming for everyone. Everyone deserves the right to feel included and to share their history and knowledge with the people around them judgement free.
