I am a product of my 80’s childhood. My contribution to the environment has always been to use plastic instead of paper. We were told we were killing the trees! So much so that it was a process I had to work through when I first started burning litho paper, for my pyrography, during my Advanced Diploma year at Tafe.
Now we are a generation of adults who have grown up and found out how harmful plastic is for the environment. Microplastics are terribly harmful to our native wildlife and our ocean life. It is an awful problem man has created and it is driven by consumerism.
“Audrey” is a bridal ensemble comprising of bodice, skirt & train made from 100% (new) single use retail plastic bags – that otherwise would have gone into landfill, after they became illegal for retailers to distribute in Western Australia mid 2022.
Audrey’s train is 160cm long & covered in 23 layers of ruffles. Her fitted strapless bodice has 10 layers of ruffles. To complete the look my model wears a floor length tulle underskirt that I made from a donated secondhand evening gown.
I designed, draped and carefully machine stitched Audrey over a period of approximately 3 weeks. Audrey was on display at the Geraldton Tafe Grad Show Exhibition on November 25, 2022
Moving forward I try to use eco friendly mediums whenever possible and enjoy the challenge of zero waste mixed media projects.
