Amy Houston is an emerging artist and Clinical Nurse and Midwife from the Lockyer Valley in Queensland, Australia. Houston’s artworks are influenced by the beauty of nature, her family, pets and career. Houston creates works that have depth, and evoke a sense of emotion, dealing with the human experience and storytelling, as told through the lens of her experience as a health care professional. Her works deal with commentary around the lack of integrity in the field of health care, specifically the devaluing of the individual, human connection, rawness of humanity and the journey of becoming a parent. Houston’s career as a nurse/midwife has allowed her the privilege of seeing humanity in its most primal states, with all pretence peeled away. Her career has led her to develop a deep interest in supporting new families in their transition to parenting. These themes overlap in her art practice, in which she utilises mediums including drawing, painting, and capturing moments within both clinical and everyday life through photography. Houston is enrolled in the Bachelor of Visual Arts at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), majoring in studio practice. Her work has been shown at the UniSQ ‘Previous Owner’ exhibition and the Toowoomba Art Society Postcard exhibition.
