Paintings

Titled: Wild West

Measurements: 297mm x 227mm

Materials: acrylic paint on artist paper

Painted April 2025

Resolved work based on painting week 5 activities. Week five activities were about making representational images. This resolved work was achieved through using the masking technique to create an abstract image that is still referencing the original source.

Titled: Viewfinder to The Circle of Life

Measurements: 297mm x 210mm

Materials: watercolour paint on watercolour paper

Painted April 2025

Resolved work based on week two painting exercises. Instead of using the cardboard viewfinder, I decided to use my camera lens as the ‘view finder.’ These images where created using watercolour from photographs I have taken. Interestingly, when analysing the chosen images, I have been able to see a theme around nature and the circle of life woven into my work.

Titled: Big Hearted

Measurements: 297mm x 420mm

Materials: acrylic paint on artist paper

Painted May 2025

Resolved work based on week threes studio exercises. Created in pop art style, using four colours placed according to tonal values of reference picture. This technique imbues a portrait with emotional and psychological aspects.

This painting is of lovely Amanda. Amanda is an incredibly beautiful person and excellent nurse/midwife. I look to her as a nursing role model in how she cares for others, her passion and her deep kindness. One element I tried to capture in this painting is Amandas eyes, to show just how beautiful I think that she is. I love that she is holding a baby in this picture, with obvious tenderness and joy.

Titled: Raw/Roar

Measurements: 297mm x 420mm

Materials: acrylic paint on artist paper

Painted April 2025

This painting is of a woman holding her baby to her chest after giving birth at home. The theme of this work is love. I want to explore my feelings around midwifery, my love for it and my fears. I look at this picture and see beauty, of a woman who ‘did it,’ I feel proud of her.

One element that cannot fully be appreciated in this painting is the arm across her shoulders. This is the arm of the midwife, circling her and holding her, during one of the most intense moments of her life. This is incredibly important to me and a major reason for being a midwife. When I had my first son my midwife was all of this for me, she held me and carried me through the pregnancy, birth and postnatal period. She was my midwife for both of my sons and now I have adopted her as my mum and the kids grandma. The impact she had on me is a major reason I became a midwife. I had learnt first hand just how important a midwife could be to a woman and I wanted to try pass on some of the love she has given me.
