These two images were created in printmaking. The brief was to create an image that is at least a A4 size, it could be either a screenprint, stencilled painting, collage or a combination of these processes.
This screen print that depicts my friend holding her daughter hand. It was made from a photograph I captured, it was converted to half tone by an app called ‘Real Halftone.’ This image was put onto a clear plastic sheet then put onto the screen with UV light. I was then able to print it onto paper with various backgrounds.
I chose this image as it resonates with me at my current stage of life. Of being a mother to young children, of holding their hand. My oldest son no longer holds my hand, but I feel I hold him in so many other ways as his mother. I am honouring the role of the mother in their children’s life and society through this image.
All The Things- Concertina Book
Size: A2
The brief for this book was to create a concertina book of at least 8 pages. It needed to have basic covers and could be made from any two dimensional mediums to create its content. It was to talk about my interpretation of visual storytelling.
For this work I embraced the brief of using this book to discuss my interpretation of visual storytelling. Through this work, I talk about my journey this year into the art world and learning about telling stories through my art. It talks about how this was hard for me and came as somewhat as a shock of what stories were coming out through my art. When I put all my art together there are themes to it that I did not realise were there. Making myself ask what is it I am trying to say? Where is this going? How are these stories coming out of me without my actively trying? This work also talks about the importance of friendship and connection to support through difficult times.
Geometric Heart
Size: varying
Materials: ink on coloured paper and watercolour paper
The brief for this work was to create works out of either linocut or an etching, I created both. This image was created by etching and ink.
This work depicts a geometric heart and various types of paper. The meaning of this work is that the heart has many components, some dark, some playful, happy, sad etc. It’s all the pieces together that makes us, no one is just one thing. I am interested in geometric shapes, but are yet to fully explore them in my art practise.
I also made this work to go into my concertina book, see below for more details about the book.
All The Things
Size: 15cm x 15cm
Materials: ink on coloured paper
This work was created with linocut and ink. The brief for this work was to create works out of either linocut or an etching, I created both.
This linocut looks at a phase that I have heard a friend saying lots and I liked it. I feel like it covers a lot of bases. The other elements of this image are a kids wagon on a path with a balloon tied to its handle and its fallen to the ground. I printed onto coloured paper to make the work more playful, childlike. I left extra marks on the image, as noise, the noise of ‘all the things’ buzzing around my head.
This work talks about the weight of ‘all the things.’ How they are heavy for my heart to carry all the time, it can be deflating. There is no child in this image but feels like there was but she has left. Perhaps all the things are too heavy and she had to walk away.
The main aim for this linocut was to use it as the title page of the concertina book we needed to make, see below for more details about this book.
