Professional Practice

Professional Practice entails three sub-strands that teacher should adhere to. These three sub-strands are to ensure that teachers succeed in, effective teaching and learning, creating and maintaining supportive and safe learning environments, and assessing students and providing feedback (AITSL, 2017).

As a teacher, I plan to ensure I am meeting the standards outlined in this domain. To confirm I am meeting the standards, I will create engaging and informing lessons, place the expectation that students have the right to feel safe and respected in my learning environment, I will pursue relevant and fair behaviour management plans and use a collection of strategies that will improve the quality of learning for all of my students.

According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs (Burleson, 2014), love and belonging and safety and security are two of the largest sections of the model. Maslow suggests that humans will focus on their largest need before anything else (Burleson, 2014). This statement suggests that students will seek to solve their largest needs (love, belonging, safety and security) before they consider the higher needs of the hierarchy. Students will seek for belonging in their classroom before they consider self-esteem and self actualisation as a need to consider. As a teacher, I plan to make my learning environment as welcoming and comforting as possible to ensure my students largest needs are taken care of first.

To effectively assess students and provide feedback, I will adhere to assessment guidelines set by the school I am employed in, I will make sure the assessments compare to the content of the unit. I plan to provide my students with timely, accurate, fair and informative feedback to ensure they are improving their work to the best of their ability.
