I was fortunate to teach a year 12 biology class about biodiversity and I revised with this class for their final exams. My mentor asked me to test my students on what they know about biodiversity as my first lesson so I could get an understanding about how they were doing and how I could make a learning activity to assist any areas that the students were less confident in.

The students spent the first 30 minutes of the lesson completing my quiz, after they had finished, marked all of them and began my lesson on feedback and the quiz answers. I noticed that most of my students were struggling with their Simpson’s Diversity Index so I made sure to include an example and then made an activity where the students assisted me to find the SDI and then the students had a turn individually.

After I had gone through the answers, some of my students responded and enjoyed the quiz as it allowed them to also see what they needed to revise more for their final exam.

I made this quiz as summative as possible, I made sure that my students were not stressed about getting incorrect answers and could learn about how they can improve their understanding.

My mentor teacher explained that I had made my lesson timely and easily understandable, they also mentioned that it is helpful to include feedback lessons like this one so that the students can self-assess and I can grasp an understanding about their knowledge.
