About Our Research Group
The University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ)’s Artificial Intelligence Applications Laboratory is a dedicated research group within the School of Mathematics Physics and Computing.
The group collaborates with UniSQ’s Research Institutes, Schools, Centres and Australian and International universities. Through research and research training of PhD, M.Sc., Postdoctoral (early and mid career researchers) our group specialises in artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, including smart decision systems using advanced data analytics to improve the overall system efficiency.
We are passionate about solving industry-relevant practical problems. We adopt cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methodologies and through science and innovation we build smart algorithms for pattern recognition, data mining, deep learning and predictive modelling that supports real-life decision-making process in health/medical, renewable energy, defence, agriculture, climate, air quality, environment, national security and wireless communications. Our projects are diversely applied in industry sectors.
We collaborate on projects with the Australian Research Council, the Australian Government Department of Defence, the Australian Government Office of National Intelligence, CSIRO Data61, CSIRO Environment, Cogninet AI, Nexus eCare, Australian Bureau of Statistics, Electricity Energy Companies, Federal and State Government funding agencies.
We are part of the Australian Data Science Network (ADSN), UniSQ’s Institute of Advanced Engineering and Space Sciences, UniSQ’s Centre for Health Research, UniSQ’s Institute of Life Science and the Environment and UniSQ’s Centre for Applied Climate Sciences. Our research support UniSQ’s flagship areas of: health, defence and environment and we contribute towards UniSQ’s emerging research strength of Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing.
Our Group Motto:
Sky is the Limit !
This group was formed by Professor Ravinesh Deo, a key supervisor of PhD and master’s research students to provide an enriched learning experience to all of his postgraduate students, which has been a a motto of his academic life experiences in supervising and graduating some of the finest higher degree by research (HDR) students at UniSQ.
For such excellence in HDR supervision Prof Deo received the Stellar Supervisor 2024 and the University’s Employee Achievement Award [2020 Ronel Erwee Memorial Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Research Supervision] demonstrating ultimate learning experience for his PG students, HES Faculty Excellence in Research for highly productive research leadership in the Faculty of Health Engineering and Sciences, and University’s Employee Achievement Award of Excellence in Research after being named as the 2021 Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher with his publications ranking in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index
The research group involves associate supervisors in computing, energy, atmospheric sciences, computing, mathematics, science, engineering technology, health, data science and artificial intelligence. Our group develops machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms, deep reinforcement learning, meta-models, explainable and interpretable AI and contemporary models. The group completed projects with external industries incl. Australian Bureau of Statistics, Queensland Government, Australian Defence.
Our group works with overseas universities in the Pacific, UK, USA, Europe & Asia and has external supervisors from academia collaborating with USQ supervisors.
