Activity: Allyship
Reflecting on the privilege walk video (BFMP and Thomas, 2015), I understand that my privilege is fairly high being a white, married, heterosexual female from an English-speaking supportive working-class family living in a safe neighbourhood who has access to many support services. I am also not overly surprised that my privilege ended fairly high despite being a woman who still experiences gender inequality, fears sexual assault, has a learning disability, comes from a family with no college education, has a student loan, was bullied growing up, has been homeless and experienced extreme financial hardship.
As the video was made with Americans, I feel some questions would be better if reframed for our wide-ranging multi-cultural, diverse country, such as; Did you grow up or live in a remote or regional area? Australia has many remote and regional areas where support services, education, cultural experience and employment opportunities are comparably limited to those who reside near cities, as was my experience.
Intersectionality is the convergence of multiple identities and the factors which I feel make up my personal concept of intersectionality include being; a white heterosexual woman with a learning disability; a mother to First Nation children; a carer to children with disabilities and a wife to a First Nations person.
