Like a picture, I have learnt that models and exemplars speak ‘a thousand words’ when it comes to encouraging students to engage with the content. Demonstration (DEMO) models that depict ‘the next step’ are useful to ‘show’ students the expectations of the lesson.
Models & Exemplars
I have the privilege of team teaching the YR9 Furnishing Pathways (YR9 FUR) class during Term 1 and Term 2. Models and DEMO models have been great tools to show students their next steps and the end goal. This has created excitement and expectation for the final product. The students really enjoyed this project, and the models played a big part in making it a huge success.

These were so helpful to show the students the different faces of an image they were to project.

APST’S
MODELS and EXEMPLARS can be relevant to several APST/s categories that emphasise planning, effective teaching strategies, and student learning:
3.1 Plan for and design learning programs and teaching activities: Creating a model or exemplar demonstrates strong planning skills. It allows the teacher to pre-visualise the project requirements and provide students with a concrete reference point.
3.3 Use teaching strategies to develop conceptual understanding: An exemplar can be a powerful tool for students to grasp project expectations and understand key concepts involved.
4.1 Create and implement engaging learning experiences: A well-crafted model can inspire students and ignite their interest in the upcoming project.
4.2 Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning sequences: The model can be used to introduce the project, guide students through the process, and set expectations for their own work.
5.1 Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning: The model itself can be a form of formative assessment, allowing the teacher to identify any potential gaps in student understanding before the project begins.
Teachers demonstrate aspects of these APST/s categories by creating a model or exemplar. It showcases effective planning, the use of clear learning materials, and the ability to create a foundation for student understanding and engagement in the upcoming project.
