Marking Assessments – March 2024

I team teach YR9, 11 & 12 Furnishing Pathways (FUR) and YR12 Design and Engineering Skills. I have been able to mark or moderate practical assessments for all subjects.
Marking students’ work is a crucial aspect of assessment and feedback within the APSTs. It allows me to assess student learning, inform their teaching practices and provide guidance for further improvement.

Funny Story: I team-marked the YR9 Jeep projects, collated the agreed marks, and then transferred them to Excel. Everything was going smoothly. I am nailing this stuff! The students wanted to know how they went, so I told them they were all marked. Everybody passed, and overall, the class went really well. I was on a roll, so I PINNED THEM UP ON THE WHITEBOARD FOR ALL TO SEE!!!!!
I was immediately cornered by the B’s who thought they were A’s, and the C’s who thought they were also A’s or at least high B’s. Luckily, the supervising teacher was very methodical in the marking process, so I was confident I could explain the marks, but it was mayhem, with lots of disappointment and bargaining attempts.
It was a good teachable moment for myself and the students. The marking was wholistic, including attitude, workshop behaviour, safety, building to the plans and obviously the quality of the work.
My wife, a teacher of many decades, offered an observation that convinced me not to do it again, and that was to do with privacy and catering to the anxious students in the class.

Marking students’ work:

2. Knowledge and understanding:
2.1 Knowledge and understanding: This standard emphasises a teacher’s understanding of the curriculum content and learning objectives. Marking student work allows teachers to assess if students are meeting these objectives and identify areas where the curriculum delivery might need adjustment.
3. Planning for and implementing effective teaching and learning:
3.4 Reflect on, evaluate and improve teaching knowledge, skills and practice: Feedback provided during marking can be a valuable source of information for teachers to reflect on their teaching effectiveness and identify areas for improvement in future lessons.
4. Creating and implementing engaging learning experiences (limited):
4.1 Create and implement engaging learning experiences: Effective feedback provided during marking can motivate students and encourage them to take ownership of their learning. It can also help them see the value of the learning activities.
5. Assessment and providing feedback:
5.1 Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning: This is the most directly relevant standard. Marking student work is a core assessment component that allows teachers to evaluate student understanding, identify areas of strength and weakness, and provide feedback to guide further learning.
5.2 Interpret student data to inform teaching and learning: Analysing patterns and trends in student work during marking can inform future teaching strategies and lesson planning.
5.3 Develop teaching programs and assessment strategies that cater to students’ diverse needs and learning styles. Marking allows teachers to identify students requiring additional support or differentiation in their learning experiences.
6. Professional engagement (limited):
6.2 Use ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) effectively to support learning and teaching (if applicable): This standard could be relevant if teachers use online platforms or digital tools for marking and providing feedback.

Overall, marking students’ work is a crucial aspect of assessment and feedback within the APSTs. It allows teachers to assess student learning, inform their teaching practices, and provide guidance for further improvement.
