Mandatory Training & Orientation

I completed mandatory training courses offered by my school at the start of this year, and they helped me develop skills that align with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs). Here’s a breakdown of how each course is connected to the APSTs:

Mandatory All-Staff Training:

Here’s a breakdown of how each course is connected to the APSTs:

Curriculum Activity Risk Assessment (CARA) online training: This training made me a better planner regarding curriculum activities (APST 2.1). It showed me how to ensure activities are safe and effective for students and identify and manage potential risks before they happen (APST 4.1). Maintain Student Safety (APST 4.4). Engage in professional learning and improve practice (APST 6.2). Comply with legislative, administrative and organisational requirements. (APST 7.2.)

Mandatory All-Staff Training program: This program emphasized the importance of continuous learning and development (APST 6.2), a key part of being a good teacher, according to the APSTs. It also covered staff well-being and student safety, ultimately contributing to a better school environment (APST 7.3).

Student Protection Training course: This training was essential to uphold my ethical responsibility to keep my students safe (APST 1.2). It also gave me the tools to recognize potential harm and report it, which helps create a supportive and secure learning environment for them (APST 4.1).

Even though the trainings themselves didn’t directly map to specific APSTs, they addressed important aspects of being a good teacher, which aligns with the overall APST standards.

Completing the checklist during the orientation at my new school allows me to demonstrate several of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST).

Domain: Professional Practice

Standard 3: Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning (Focus area: 3.1 Accommodate the specific learning needs of students) – By familiarizing myself with the school’s curriculum, learning resources, and differentiation strategies, I’ll be better prepared to meet the needs of all my students.
Standard 4: Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments (Focus areas: 4.1 Establish routines and expectations for classroom learning, 4.2 Manage classroom activities) – Learning about the school’s behaviour management strategies, classroom routines, and emergency procedures will help me establish a positive and safe learning environment for my students from day one.

Domain: Professional Engagement

Standard 6: Engage in professional learning (Focus area: 6.2 Identify and plan professional learning needs) – Understanding the school’s professional development opportunities and expectations will allow me to take initiative in my own professional growth and contribute to the school’s learning community.
Standard 7: Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community (Focus areas: 7.1 Establish relationships and build partnerships with colleagues, 7.2 Respect the rights and perspectives of parents and carers) – Meeting with colleagues, understanding school-community relations, and familiarising myself with communication protocols for parents/carers will help me build strong relationships and collaborate effectively within the school community.

By focusing on these standards while completing the orientation tasks, I can show my commitment to becoming a valuable school member and creating a successful learning environment for my students.
