This is a wonderful interactive session. Resources used throughout are available on the course StudyDesk within this week’s industry presentation folder. What did you glean from this presentation?

  1. For me, there are two take-home messages from this session. Firstly, to make connections with all students. Students need to know that teachers care and are interested in them. As a teacher, I am the adult and professional and it is my role to find out about students, make the effort to know students and understand there may be underlying reasons for behaviour even if students “push back” or do not show reciprocation. In addition to student relationships, parent and other adult relationships are imperative to support student’s learning. Again, as a teacher, it is my job to engage with parents and initiate discussions and relationships. The second take-home message for me is routine, teach and reinforce. Students feel safe when their environment is predictable and they understand what is expected of them. Therefore, establishing routines and reinforcement with consistency allows students to know where they stand and they can predict what is going to happen even if they do not comply with classroom rules and expectations. It gives a sense of fairness and a feeling of safety when they are in the classroom as the know what to expect.
