Human Figure and Portraiture

Title: The Human Form

Medium: Graphite pencil on grey paper

Measurements: 210 x 297mm

Description:

This is a drawing of the top half of the human figure suspended on the 2D picture plane. The figure is portrayed in an abstract form, the shading done in straight line strokes to impress upon the audience a sense of movement and a sharp appeal, the shade strokes encompassing a touch of impressionism without colour.  The curves at the waist are specifically outlined to offer a solution for highlighting the typical view of beauty. Although it is the biased view of many of the opposite gender to have a preference for curves, this is meant to celebrate the beauty of the women’s figure in an unbiased stand. Instead of it just being a physical being, the shading strokes are intended to represent movement and the face of the woman her contemplative emotion. The focus of her emotion and motion is meant to portray the real beauty of another human.  A woman’s figure is often a vessel of people’s ideas of ideal beauty. The figure in art represents more to that to me, to me it is about what shines through from inside the human, what they are thinking and feeling. While the drawing is an example of highlighted beauty it’s form and shape, the figure also exists in space to represent a person’s personality.

Title: Body parts, study of the feet

Medium: Charcoal on grey paper

Measurements: 210 x 297mm

Description:

This is a study of the leg and feet elements drawn from looking at my feet and legs. The form exists for me as a subject to not just admire, but to study. All the joints and unique details of body parts are a way to learn about the human body as a whole. The way the human figure responds to different environments is not always something we think about, we just accept it without thinking further. Does anyone ask how the hair floats submerged in water how it changes form when it comes out, and then how it changes again when it is dry? The human’s feet are no different. Some body parts such as the feet and hands expand in the heat of summer and then shrink in colder weather. The feet I drew were hard to represent these thoughts. What I did was draw multiple times over the outline to represent change over time, with the feet stretching and then shrinking from each outline.

Title: Portrait of Beauty

Medium: White Charcoal on black paper

Measurements: 297 x 420mm

Description:

When the human body is drawn, we often view it as impressions of a face, body parts, or a whole human figure. But the human portrait can also portray your own internal mind mapping. What the artist’s work makes them feel, how they view their work and the perspective they are taking it from, or what it means to them is not always revealed. This picture “Portrait of Beauty,” was made to make one see the inquisitive eyes this portrait has. The dark background represents the depression and sadness surrounding a person, yet the beauty of a human can make everything else fade away until it is unnoticed

Process Drawing

Title: Dogmatix cowering from the cat

Medium: Black marker and pencils

Measurements: 210 x 297mm

Description:

The materials used to make the drawing are pencils, markers, and believe it or not, a Lego board.  The Lego board was used to make the mark making of circles in the background. The process of mark making was done by putting the Lego board underneath the paper and drawing colour pencils on top. The dog is based on the stories of Asterix, he was Astrix’s pet in the comic books. Although the owner had a potion to make him strong, I think the dog needed a bit of that potion so he would not cower over a cat. The shape and volume of the marks were purposed to be determined by the materials I was using unconventionally. The Lego board opened new possibilities for the disruption process.

Title: Growing up young

Medium: Black marker, graphite pencil, and water disruption

Measurements: 210 x 297mm

Description: In this picture, I wanted to visually communicate that losing someone is a process. The visual story I wanted to share is that loss must be worked through. In this picture, the boy has started to accept the situation and move on. He accepts that now that his dad has died, he is the man of the house, and he sadly thinks he needs to grow into this at such an age. In the background, the mother looks through the window, and her life is all crumbling around her and she hasn’t worked through the loss. The crumpled paper represents the broken and shattered feelings she still has. The unfinished ink where she is in the house means that she has not finished getting over the grief and she is taking longer to process the pain than her boy. The work is intended to make the audience reflect on the theme of grief and healing. The material of torn and crumpled paper to enhance a 3D-looking artwork was carefully incorporated to make viewers reflect on the representation of being torn from someone close.

Title: Dog friends

Medium: Black marker, graphite pencil

Measurements: 210 x 297mm

Description:

The process of making this artwork was to draw on one piece of paper, tear it out from the page, and place it on another piece of paper to make it look more textual and 3D. I wanted to achieve a sensory feeling and touch to the artwork so that it is not just on a flat surface. The viewer is encouraged to participate in the finished work and feel the textures with their fingers. I want them to understand modern art is not a traditional method of paper on a flat surface but can have texture and different surfaces.  The fundamental nature of markers is that they are bold and definitive. This interests me when I want to make a bold expression or signage as markers are very good at drawing the people to the focus of the marker drawings.  The process of using markers to draw the viewer’s attention to something was also enhanced by layering paper in this artwork. The possibility of layering makes the product accentuate materiality and texture. These processes are combined with my conceptual narrative that modern art is not just about the traditional ways materials are used but can be done to create a new form for the materials that are used.
