Action Competence, GenAI and Planetary Well-Being – Debating online

10 Jun, 2025 | Events | 0 comments

Recently I collaborated with doctoral student, Orsi Tuba, at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland where I am based. Together we designed of an active online session with a view to collect additional data for her research. Orsi is from Hungary and passionate about planetary well-being. One of her research ‘angles’ is the impact of GenAI to influence or support action competence.

A few weeks ago I was at Orsi’s in-person workshop at a conference in Finland and afterwards offered to host an online event with the Technology and Innovation Network (ICDE) to help extend her reach for data collection around this theme. Also, to provide an opportunity for TIN members and guests to experience a well-designed, interactive and collaborative online experience.

More about the topic of Planetary Well-Being

View Orsi’s slides below to follow the conversation that then led into a formal debate within the session.

Shout out to Dr Kristof Fenyvesi, one of Orsi’s doctoral supervisors who also participated in this event.

Online learning design

I believe online learning can be the equivalent of face-to face learning. I also believe that most humans crave social situations where they can learn together. I understand we often crave being in the same room as others and the advantages a real time, in-person session provides. For many (especially when we are dispersed around the world) this is not possible therefore I personally work hard to provide an experience that is satisfying, engaging and positive for all.

I encouraged Orsi to run an online debate around her broad topic of GenAI, planetary well-being and action competence. Each of these areas in themselves require careful attention. Orsi decided to keep the focus on the impact (negative or positive) of GenAI on personal motivation, assuming of course that the underlying intent was to explore planetary wellness. We used the Engageli platform for the session which provided table visibility for us the ‘instructors’ and flexibility for participants through access to Google docs for collaborative debate preparation via the platform.

The resulting debate is well worth listening to via the video below. Given participants had very little time to prepare focused arguments, and given that one of the speakers was walking through a park in the UK, I commend and congratulate our TIN members for their high sprits. I also thank Orsi for her willingness to try new things and to share current research which is in line with the TIN theme of AI in education.
