Emerging artist Isobel West is located in Queensland Australia. Her practice is based in portraiture and abstract realism. The work deals with emotional and mental health, while also exploring feminism and how women are viewed in the world based on her personal experience. The work depicts a first hand perspective of how women are treated and viewed in the 21st century, even though the evolution of women, democracy and human rights has evolved. The work portrays women as devalued and objectified based on West’s personal encounters, emotions, and life experiences.
West was forced out of her childhood, and to mature quickly. As a result, her practice utilises bold colours and child like imagery to reconnect with her childhood.
West works on paper and canvas using oil pastels, acrylic, fabric, and coloured pencils. West has works in private collections in Australia and has participated in group exhibitions including ‘Previous Owner’ at the University of Southern Queensland, and ‘Play’ at St Andrews Hospital. West has undertaken a two week internship at the Toowoomba Gallery and a 4 day residency ‘Creative Generation: In Residence 2023 Digital Exhibition’ at The state funded Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia.
