Ceramics 2024

My Module 1 pinch pots explore the material of stoneware, incorporating colour symbolism and thematic symbolism through the use of blue, yellow and green, evoking the ocean, the sky and the land respectively, and the motif of feathers, which evoke freedom. The pieces are designed to be functional objects, which a conceptual aesthetic.

My Module 1 cups continue with the themes of the pinch-pots, while adding handles. The focus was on the functionality of the objects, and the quality of the joinery.

My Module 2 objects explored slab building in order to make two jugs, one functional, one sculptural. I built off the themes of my Module 1 work, while finalising them in my sculptural jug. It is meant to discuss the concept of a ‘wounded’ sense of freedom, that despite being more free than I have previously felt, I continue to restrict and bind myself to something.

My Module 3 Ritual Objects discuss the everyday ritual of taking care of my birds. Each morning I prepare a salad, reflected in the Black Vessel and modular components, and each night I give the birds a treat so they get into their cage. I use the metaphor of a garnish, through the ceramic feathers, to complete the pieces, just like the birds do for my day.

‘Over-everything’ is a combination of Ceramics and Sculpture that explores my ‘Artist Identity’. I chose to explore my overactive imagination, and the benefits and detriments that come with, through an overwhelming amalgamation of macrame, beading, origami and embroidered panels – that display elements of themes and materials I enjoy exploring in my practice, flowing out of a single ceramic vessel. The piece is inspired by the visual and concept of a ‘Cornucopia’ – or Horn of Plenty.
