The professional engagement domain consists of two standards; Engage in professional learning and engage professionally with colleagues, parents and carers and the community. This domain means teachers need to understand how important it is to work ethically, collaborate with coworkers, outside professionals, and other community representatives. It is about recognising the significance that parents and carers play in students’ education and knowing strategies to work effectively, sensitively, and confidentially with parents and carers using the school communication plan and or the Parent and Community Engagement (PACE) framework (Department of Education, 2023).
Additionally, it is about teachers identifying their own learning needs and participating in targeted professional development to update their understanding and knowledge that not only benefits their teaching practice but has a flow on effect for the students and the school. Professional development should be guided by student learning needs, building on the teacher’s individual competencies within the context of the school (Department of Education and Training, n.d).
An important aspect of this domain is being aware of the implications of legislative, organisational, and professional requirements, policies and processes that are required of teachers.
