Professional knowledge

The professional knowledge domain encompasses what knowledge the teacher has about their students and how they learn, and knowledge of the content and how it can be delivered (APST, 2017). I believe once a teacher has developed their professional knowledge on their students and their learning styles, they have the capabilities to teach the content in a pedagogical way that aligns with their students (Phillips, 2023).

In order to successfully know my students and how they learn I need to prioritise meaningful student-teacher relationships. I will make authentic efforts to collect data and resources to get to know my students including their physical social/emotional capabilities, learning capabilities, cultural/religious backgrounds, gender, strengths, hobbies/interests (Victoria State Government, 2023). I will do this as I am aware of the role the classroom teacher can have on students’ wellbeing and further how effective my teaching and their learning will be within the classroom once a positive relationship is formed (Victoria State Government, 2023).

This data gathered can then be used to successfully implement the Australian curriculum content (ACARA, 2023) alongside a range of Age-appropriate pedagogies (Queensland Government, 2023) and evidence-based high impact teaching strategies (Victoria State Government, 2023). The teaching and learning within the classroom will be highly engaging and fun to incorporate my students’ learning needs and interests drawn from all key learning areas, general capabilities, and cross curriculum priorities of the curriculum. I believe this domain the most important domain as it builds the foundation of knowledge and understanding for the other domains of the professional standards for teachers’ (APST, 2017).
