Artist Statement

My art practice is process driven and includes sculptural and traditional basketry, artist books and wearable art made from paper and natural fibres harvested around my home in the Shoalhaven, NSW. The slow process of growing, harvesting and preparing materials attunes me to the ancient cycles nature and those who came before me. I approach my work with natural materials with respect for the environment, to take only what I need and waste little.

By stitching, twining, weaving and interlacing, I make sculptural forms often based on a grid pattern where the work is repetitive, rhythmic and meditative. This reflects an ethos of slow making and living where a mindful practice encourages me to produce less and spend more time observing and experimenting with the abundance of natural materials around me.

Paper too, plays an important part of my practice through making artist books with botanically dyed paper and making wearable art using Japanese and Scandinavian paper string. Paper has memory. It is ancient and complex.
