Madeline Blaik

Created to create

Artist Statement

My name is Madeline Blaik, and I am a Wearable Artist who lives and works in Ipswich, Queensland. I have studied Fashion Design at the Australian Institute of Creative Design, and am currently studying a Bachelor of Visual Art at the University of Southern Queensland, hoping one day to fuse the two disciplines together to create spectacular wearable art.  My wearable art journey began over fifteen years ago  in 2006, when entering my creations into competitions, which resulted in unexpected, fantastic success. Over the years my work has grown more confident and capable and has gained practical experience through entering these competitions. I am inspired by several designers, such as Edith Head, Colleen Atwood and most importantly my work is influenced by wearable art artist and photographer Kirsty Mitchell. Several years ago, I was diagnosed with several mental health illnesses, and the reason I continue to create is in order to get those demons out of my mind and onto paper or a mannequin where I can deal with it. To put it another way, I create to survive! I continue to create and reflect on the world around me through entering competitions and experimenting with materials, methods and inspirations.
