Artist Statement

Maree Gilbert is an artist/creator living and working on the island of Canaipa in the beautiful waters of Quandamooka Country (Russell Island, Moreton Bay, Qld). Maree predominantly works in ceramics and printmaking, often drawing on the land and sea for inspiration. Her particular focus is on environmental issues, and the conservation of flora and fauna in our coastal and oceanic provinces. Maree has previously worked in environmental and marine conservation and has had a life-long association with the Great Barrier Reef. She has a deep wonder and respect for our oceans which flows through her art.

My art journey is just beginning so I have yet to write an artist’s statement. I can talk about the things that are important to me and how they influence my creative works. I am passionate about the coasts and oceans and in particular, those of my home on the East Coast of Australia. I have a commitment to promoting the conservation and protection of our wild places, and leaving the planet in better condition than that we found it in, for future generations. I hope my art will raise awareness of the impacts of our activities on other lifeforms and landforms.

I have a love of the history of people and places. To this end, I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of our country, their culture and stories, and pay respect to Elders, past, present and future.
