1.6 Independent scholarly inquiry

Throughout my studies, I performed a number of independent scholarly enquires, I must admit that whilst since transitioning into the workforce as a psychological professional I have not performed an inquiry to the same depth nor degree as I did in my masters however the skills I acquired from performing these are an important part of being a practicing organisational psychologist. The critical analysis skills developed by the scholarly enquiry are used on a daily basis as an organisational psychologist to ensure the policies, procedures and training put in place is evidence-based and most likely to be efficient and accurate.

One of the most thought-provoking inquiries I performed focused on whether the development and wide use of social media had made us more effective or less effective communicators. I must admit one of the most satisfying parts of this research was I went into with a prediction on what I thought the findings may show, but with the scientific mind still fully engaged. Throughout the course of the study, as the evidence mounted I happily found that my prediction was incorrect and that the question was in fact far deeper and far more multifaceted than I originally had given thought to. On the initial assessment of the research question, I was of the assumption that social media would have negatively affected the efficacy of communication. What I had failed to account for was the wealth of support groups available to individuals in which the level of anonymity provided to them by the internet actually made accessing help acceptable. I had failed to account for the way the internet age had made geographical barriers all but a thing of the past, where despite how rural or remote an individual was, a simple internet connection provided them with a multitude of resources and communities that would have otherwise been out of reach.
