Situation is a year four class in a lower socioeconomic area where there were twenty-seven students. There were two ESL/D, three Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, one on the autism spectrum and two on behaviour management plans. This is a medium sized school and has a lot of resources however the teachers go the extra mile in order to make the classroom feel safe and inviting.
Task Allow the students to feel they have a space to go to when they feel overwhelmed or they need to take a short break to self-regulate their emotions (Artifact 4). It is very important that Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (the need for their physiological needs to be met) (McLeod. 2024) are met before they can work on Bloom’s Taxonomy (higher learning development) (Armstrong. 2010). A student won’t learn if they feel threatened or haven’t eaten or haven’t had enough sleep.
Action The teacher made a little area in the classroom with pillows blankets and a hanging net so that students could sit there in comfort till they were ready to come back to the lesson. Students can sit quietly and curl up under the blanket and lay on a pillow or they can read quietly in there laying down on a pillow or sitting up against a pillow.
Result Students have less major meltdowns when they know that they have somewhere safe to go and escape from whatever is going on, the teacher will often go over and check on the student to see what set the child’s emotions to escalate to determine how not to let that happen again or at least not as severely.
