Standard 6 Engage in professional learning

Situation is I engaged in professional development for this assignment and did four online units which consists of watching four different presentations from Integrity and OneSchool, to Strategies for Success for Beginning teachers as well as Strategies to Survive and Thrive in the First Year of Teaching. It was a total of five and a bit hours.

The task was to answer the questions written under the video in regards to the topic and how I will use or reflect upon the information given. I wrote a paragraph or two about each video and this helped to imbed the learning further as it made me think about how I might be an effective teacher without burning myself out. Professional Development is important for many reasons, it leads to “improved teacher knowledge, skills and practice” (Department of Education. Nd).

Action is to write a response to each video watched and show how I will be able to improve upon my skills and practice as well as keep up to date with current knowledge. The first video was a compulsory one and I was to write a couple of short sentences about each topic covered in the video. The next video also compulsory was to discuss how OneSchool could help with meeting administrative and organisational requirements. The third one which I got to choose out of several topics had me briefly outline and discuss the five strategies or learning I gained from the video. The last one was also a unit of my choosing which had me look at which strategy described in the presentation resonates with me and then how will I implement it in my first year of teaching.

Result I now have a wide range of strategies and knowledge to help get me through my first year of teaching and beyond and this will lead to further professional development. It has helped me to reflect on myself and the type of teacher I want to be as well as how to go about learning about my students through the use of OneSchool.
