About me

I’m Miriam Sharp, a Dutch-Australian emerging artist currently studying a Bachelor of Creative Arts and Community Wellbeing at the University of Southern Queensland. I immigrated to Australia from the Netherlands in 2003 after completing a Master’s Degree in Environmental Policy and Education. In Australia I studied Urban and Regional Planning and worked in the field for 12 years.

My preferred medium is fibre. I spin yarn, also using non-traditional materials such as paper, and I knit, crochet and weave pieces in a freeform style. I’m mostly self-taught in this field, learning from reading and watching other fibre artists along the way. Through my university studies I’m also having fun with other media.

I create works that reflect my interest in experiences of life and in particular the way we live. The majority of the world’s population lives in urban areas, however we are becoming more isolated, less socialised and further alienated from nature. I’m interested in people’s experiences of urban living and how to improve this for ourselves, others and the world around us.
