Most of the works that you’ll find on my website form part of the Bachelor of Creative Arts and Community Wellbeing. Now in my second year, I’m taking classes in ceramics, sculpture and painting.
Living Life
This exhibition comprises the work I have completed for the first semester of my second year of studies.
Uncle Don was an engineer who worked in the UK for a few years back in the early 80s. When he came home to Australia he brought with him a couple of little music boxes shaped like a traditional English cottage and playing ‘an English Country Garden’. One of these boxes became the centre piece for Past and Present. The half with the music box in it represents the past, a time where issues such as colonialism and supremacism were considered acceptable. These days we live in McMansions, however those issues still exist, albeit veiled.
This work led me to think more broadly about the way we as people, as a society, live. We have gone from living in caves, houses and units to high-rises. Is this really Progress? Are we backing ourselves into a corner? Who knows what’s next, where and how we will be living in the future. Perhaps we need to consider alternative ways of living, e.g. investigate living underground. Who wouldn’t want to live in a Hobbit house?
At a more profound level, Life considers birth and death and whatever comes after, if anything. Is it a cycle? When life starts (again), it consists of ‘bits’ without a brain – Brainless. It is suspended in and constrained by the space it is in, primitive in appearance. As a person evolves, they slowly develop an identity. Faceless hasn’t quite made it that far yet.
Once we have an identity, continuous reflection on self occurs to learn about who we are and what is important to us. Do we worship False Idols? Something like the accumulation of wealth is high on the list for a lot of people. But when does worshipping Mammon, the god of wealth, go too far? How strong is Mammon’s Lure? Do we waste our money or turn to the light? Or do we take the middle road?
