About Me

I’m Nicholas Coe, an ex Maintenance Fitter within the Australian Army with a passion for all things IT.
Born and raised in Queensland, I currently reside in the Brisbane region where I’m currently undertaking my studies as part of my journey to become a cyber security professional.

Background

Post finishing school, from February 2014 to August 2022 I served in the Australian Defence Force as a Fitter Armament (with the last year being in a junior supervisor position), where I performed maintenance on a wide array of weapons and general equipment. At the beginning of 2022, I made the decision to move on from the Army with no real plan in mind and only knowing I needed to try something different. I started an extended separation process to allow time to figure out what my next role and living location would be. Halfway through this process, I discovered the incredible bespoke offer to begin a remote, self-paced cyber security degree through the University of Southern Queensland. After applying and discovering I was one of the lucky successful applicants, my journey quickly began as a new cyber security professional.

Motivation for Change

A strong desire to learn new skills and engage critical thinking to increase job satisfaction is the first of three main driving factors for my motivation to begin a career within IT. The second reason revolves around enhancing a work-life balance by working within a flexible role. The ability to work from home, work in a hybrid model, or have flexible working hours leads to more family time and a healthier lifestyle. Finally, ever since my teen years, I’ve had equal interest within the maintenance/engineering fields and computer science fields. After spending more than 8 years within a maintenance field, I feel it’s time to explore a career in IT to complete my self-discovery and ensure I have no regrets at the end of my working career.

Strengths & Interests

Most of my strengths and interests are tightly coupled together. A few of these include;

  • Problem solving,
  • Programming & Scripting,
  • Collaboration,
  • Rapid Learning,
  • Self Development,
  • Network Security,
  • Penetration Testing & OSINT,
  • Data aggregation,
  • and, Protecting & Helping Others.

I always enjoy learning new skills and turning my weaknesses into strengths wherever possible. A new career in cyber security takes this to a whole new level and I couldn’t be more excited!
