Watching Dylan’s acceptance speech above, what do you notice?
He acknowledged all the people doing well in their jobs and showed equality by doing this. He did not speak from someone with a disability but someone who is just as equal as others.
What does he say about disability?
- When he was young, he had a tumour removed from his spinal cord, which made him disabled at birth.
- He felt different when he was growing up from others
- He felt unfortunate and hopeless, and the TV ads made him feel like this was the only thing he had to live for.
- No, he has a different view of himself and is surrounded by good support from his friends and family. He loves being who he is.
- He wants everyone to support NDIS, which helps to make changes in the lives of people with disability.
- He said to be aware of our unconscious bias and that we should change our perception.
- People with disabilities should be encouraged or supported to get into jobs to get off the pension.
What do you think this moment means for Australians with a disability?
It is time to get out there, act on these changes, and live a life equal to others to be seen and treated as normal.
