Week 8 Queer Case Studies

What examples from the past or recent history of queer representation can you find in your art form? How is queerness represented? Would you say it is an authentic representation? How does intersectionality complicate the picture?

One example is through naked sculptures such as the ones Romans done it is in their historical sculpturing and buildings.

In many of the examples listed this week, comedy and a light-hearted approach were used in both positive and negative ways. Think about all of the examples we’ve looked at from the past few weeks. What role do you think comedy will play in your particular creative practice?

Doing comedy must have a safe space first before a role or character can be played for cultural safety.

How do you approach things that are worth laughing at?

First of all, you need to involve everyone in making the comedy at the beginning so that everyone is happy with what you can and can’t do.

Do you think comedy can be used as a weapon in your work for political agenda?

Yes and no, depending on what context and topic.

Finally, we’ve reached the end of another module. Take a look at your definition of cultural responsibility from week one and week four. How would you revise it now? You can extend it to a paragraph if you wish.

I would revise it to look more open and to be more accepting of others’ cultures, as my Indigenous culture is not the only one in the world.
