Ceramics

My cups were designed to question functionality and the way in which cups are typically designed. I explored the idea of how they may be used and how this can be changed to affect the way in which cups are typically used.

My bowls were designed to pour and be easily used when having things like soup or noodles in them. The shape of the bowls allows one to drink easily from them. This contradicts my design choices in the cups as I decided to embrace functionality for this design.

The design of the functional jugs was to pour water as I have many plants that I am constantly watering and never have a functional jug to do this with. The design of the spout is for easy pouring and there is no handle to allow for easy holding of the vessel. The design of these jugs is inspired by waterfalls as they flow with water easily and allow for life to grow.

My design for my disfunctional jug stems from the idea of a volcano which is the opposite of a waterfall. The lava does not flow well and is very destructive when in a liquid form. The design of the jug makes it difficult for water to be poured from it. The piece that sits at the top of the jug is designed to disrupt the flow of water while also adding to the aesthetic design of the piece.

The design of these pieces ties into the ritual that I partake in every time I go out with my friends. The whiskey glass is representative of a night out and having fun with friends the cup is what I always have my drinks in, regardless of what I’m drinking. The lips are also representative of a night out and getting ready with my friends before we all go out together. The ashtray is the ritual of going outside alone to take a moment for myself before going out. This allows me to calm my nerves or stop and reflect on the night. I have one smoke which allows me to be alone for a moment and in the air outside before going back to the party and having fun with my friends.

Module 4- Ceramics and sculpture combined. This is a book representative of the difficulty of reading for me and demonstrates how I do not like reading. The handcuff represents the tie that reading has to many things within the world especially within university and study.
