W1: Starting with Ethics | Activity 1

Cultural Case Studies

The dot-point format used below enabled me to capture my initial thoughts in response to the activity concisely.

(Identify: a grandparent or someone of my grandparent’s generation that I know moderately well):

Pop (Dad’s father) – (first video, song) has dementia (Alzheimer’s); may not react at all; (second video, self-care) may exhibit some confusion

(A friend or peer of the opposite sex or different gender identification):

Caitlin []– aligns with progressive values; would likely react positively and affirmingly, perhaps with mixed feelings

(A friend who doesn’t live in Australia):

Kara N – an American citizen, would likely be somewhat confused without clarification; (second video, self-care) would likely exhibit affirmation, and the reaction may not be entirely true of hidden feelings (due to beliefs, etc.)

(Someone at least ten years younger than me):

Jemima – may exhibit a certain reaction or none at all, and the reaction exhibited may not be entirely true of hidden feelings (due to parental influence); (second video, self-care) would likely never watch the video.

(How do I feel?)

(first video, song) sad that so little of Aboriginal Australian culture and ethnicity apparently remains; disconnected from and disinterested in Australian sport and its culture

(second video, self-care) uncomfortable (“I appreciate why one would alter their appearance and behaviour to reflect hidden feelings, however, this strikes me as only perpetuating gender division and normative sexual characteristics through superficial imitation – I’m confused and upset; I really don’t want to be punished for expressing a potentially offensive thought when what I believe I want to do is make everyone’s life better and less inauthentic.”)

(third video, disability) unaffected; somewhat experienced with individuals with disabilities (Duck, Zak, etc.); concerned about the systems at play in determining social institutions.
