Final Comments
During my time in ceramics, I discovered a whole new side I had not experienced. While initially I was hesitant to explore ceramics as I had sensory issues with clay in the past, I found this clay did not give the same issue. Instead, I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to hand-pinch bowls and eventually move onto slab building. While many of my bowls, cups, and jugs were more traditional, I believe they show how I developed my skill during VIS1020. If I were to continued ceramics, I believe I would explore more diverse styles and experiment with the form than what I did.
The themes I explored in my work focused mostly on nature. This can be seen in my flowers, tree, and cloud bowls. I also took inspiration from my favourite media, such as my eyeball cup which is inspired by a podcast I followed. Others are simply inspired by my favourite colours, such as the jug, and my personal life, such as the tongue and teabag. My final ceramics piece looks at what I learned through sculpting large, slab-made jugs and working with thinner pieces. It also integrates my experimentation with light from my sculpture class. The breasts that accompany the pot also draws from my understanding of molding clay, scoring two pieces together, and manipulating it to receive the form I want.
Overall, I would say my ceramics class was successful. I learned how to work with clay in a way I had not previously and found myself thoroughly enjoying the process. I learned new techniques and found myself able to create aesthetically pleasing pieces of art. Although I am not proud of all of my pieces, I do believe they tell the story of how I learned to work with clay and became better with it over the months.
