Sleeping Talisman

Sleeping Talisman (2022) by Tobias Hakanson, glass bottles containing dead moths and dog hair

Sleeping Talisman was an experimentation to create a talisman associated with items of sleep. To do this, I used melatonin, a sleeping medication, bottles and filled with with dead moths (bugs I associated with sleep and nighttime,) and dog hair from my family dog who often sleeps and is at peace. To seal them, I used wax, which I associated with sealing and nighttime as I often burn candles at night. This plays with organic material, which I have an interest in focusing on in works and challenges the viewers thoughts on what symbols are commonly associated with going to sleep, as well as using objects which has a personal symbolic significance to me.
