The Death of Eve (2021), acrylic paint and printed paper on canvas
The Death of Eve is an appropriation of The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo and thus reflects the divinity in that artwork back to my experience of being transgender. By transitioning, I am able to become a better, happier version of myself and connect with my presentation and gender in ways I was not able to before. However, there is always a background of hatred. Despite my happiness, abuse and slurs sit idle in the background, waiting for me to notice them. The words I use consist of slurs used against transgender people, with larger text being things people have told me specifically. The largest text, “What if Satan is Real and He’s Controlling Her?” was an email sent from my father after I first came out.
