Activity 1: Cultural case studies

Identify some of the following people in your life:

  • A grandparent, or someone of your grandparent’s generation that you know moderately well.  My Grandpa
  • A friend or peer of yours who is of the opposite sex or a different gender identification than you.   Tan
  • A friend or family member who doesn’t live in the same country as you.  Dada
  • Someone at least ten years younger than you. Yaya

Video 1

Grandpa didn’t feel anything because He was born in a relatively closed small village in China, and he is not familiar with Australia at all.

Tan was born in Malaysia and immigrated to Australia 20 years ago. He is very familiar with Australia. To sing Australia’s national anthem in Aboriginal languages, Tan will be happy because Australia has become more inclusive and multicultural.

Dada was born in China. She often travels to Australia, but she has no interest in Australian history and politics. What she appreciates is the beauty and food of Australia.

Yaya is 17 years old, she was born in China, grew up in Australia, and likes Australia’s multiculturalism.

Video 2

Grandpa is a serious, old-fashioned guy who probably doesn’t like people who are too funny.

Tan is a chef and pays attention to health, he should be very interested in Video 2.

Dada loves food and funny things; she should be very interested in video 2.

Yaya is not interested in Video 2, she is more interested in surfing the Internet and chatting.

Video 3

Grandpa pays more attention to the inner essence and believes that the most important thing is to be kind, and the beauty and ugliness of appearance are not important.

 Such an inspirational story will always touch Tan, he is a kind and compassionate person.

Dada is also a very gentle and compassionate person, and very curious, she should be very interested in this video.

Yaya thinks that the body problem is his private matter and should not discuss others too much. She should not be interested in this video.

Activity 2: Cultural Safety 

  1. Take a look at the list of desirable traits in an ethical leader in ‘4. What is Ethics?’. Are there examples of leaders, managers or teachers in your life where you can see these traits? Or perhaps an absence of these traits? Talk about who this person (or people) are and the effect they’ve had on the people around them.

The supreme leader of China, Xi Jinping, is an outstanding leader and ethical leader. He is loyal to the motherland, has a vision, and proceeds from the interests of the people in everything. The Chinese dream he advocated embodies everyone’s strength and everyone’s dreams. Under his leadership, people’s lives are getting better and better, and China is getting stronger.

2. Do you view yourself as capable of leadership? Regardless of if your answer is yes or no, what qualities do you think would most fit your leadership style? What are qualities you would like to cultivate in yourself that might not be present at this stage of your emerging career?

Yes, Honesty is the root of everything, and every profession needs it. It will make your business smoother and more successful.

3. Knowing everything you do now, what is your definition of cultural safety? Contain your answer in one or two sentences.

Cultural safety is when everyone’s culture is accepted and celebrated across ethnic groups and cultural backgrounds, and people are free to share their identities and cultures.
