Lizzo is no stranger to the idea that success doesn’t come easily, but she’s a firm believer that anything is achievable with dedication and hard work.
On Tuesday, April 22, during a TikTok Live session, the 36-year-old singer shared a candid update about her weight loss journey, which she began in 2023. Earlier this year, Lizzo took to Instagram to announce a major milestone, revealing that she’d reduced her body mass index (BMI) by 10.5 and shed 16% of her body fat.
The “About Damn Time” singer explained to her followers that one key aspect of her journey is maintaining a careful watch over what she eats. Lizzo mentioned that she avoids sugary foods in the morning, preferring to go for a “super savory” start to the day.
“I do something sweet, but it’s gotta have some carbs,” she explained. “I’ll have almond butter and toast. Everyone’s body is different, so find what works for you,” she continued, emphasizing that in her experience, “the only thing that works across the board, science-wise, is calories in versus calories out.”
Reflecting on past habits, Lizzo remembered a time when she’d consume “two to three” large Starbucks drinks daily. She eventually stopped this routine after realizing just how many calories she was consuming. Lizzo estimated that she could have been drinking up to 1200 calories through coffee alone. Additionally, cutting out coffee helped her “regulate my nervous system,” she shared.
The singer also spoke about adopting a calorie deficit to combat her tendency to binge. A calorie deficit occurs when the body burns more calories than it takes in. While Lizzo doesn’t believe in obsessively counting calories, she does use it as a tool to “fight against the American food system.”
Throughout her TikTok session, Lizzo also touched on how her mental health, particularly anxiety, has played a role in her weight loss journey. She mentioned that managing her anxiety has been a years-long process, but she eventually made the decision to prioritize her happiness and fully embrace being herself.
“I’ve been working to get my anxiety under control for years,” she said. “Then I decided that I want to release, and I’m ready to stop waiting to be myself fully and be happy.”
Lizzo shared how she began practicing meditation to calm her mind, which helped her create a peaceful environment for herself. “I isolated a little bit, but not in the way I used to when I was depressed,” she said. “I isolated myself in a mindful way where I had no distractions.”
She admitted that in the past, she used to distract herself with food, alcohol, and even creating problems. But Lizzo said she made a conscious effort to stop these habits. “I just focused on me,” she said, explaining that the result was a feeling of being “lighter, energetically and emotionally.”
Her transformation wasn’t just physical but mental as well, marking a pivotal moment in her journey towards emotional well-being.
