Derek Long (BEng UniSQ, PhD UniSQ) works at the University of Southern Queensland as a researcher with the Centre for Agricultural Engineering and a lecturer at the School of Science, Engineering and Digital Technologies. Specialising in image analysis for agricultural applications, Derek has worked with a range of camera platforms including drones, tractors and smartphones to enable machine monitoring in typically labour-intensive applications across the cotton, grains and livestock industries. His current research focuses heavily on tapping into the potential of smartphone sensing for crop scouting on-farm with apps such as CottonInfo NymphCheck.

Derek brings his experience in industry innovation to UniSQ’s students studying mechatronic engineering, agricultural engineering, and the Bachelor of Agricultural Technology and Management with a particular focus on using GenAI to teach programming skills. He was an early adopter of using GenAI as a tool in teaching and through it has won multiple learning and teaching awards including two national level teaching awards. He also enjoys introducing machine vision to school students, and has been running hands-on machine vision workshops for schools in the Toowoomba area since 2016.
