Derek Long (BEng UniSQ, PhD UniSQ) works at the University of Southern Queensland as a researcher with the Centre for Agricultural Engineering and a lecturer at the School of Agriculture and Environmental Science. Specialising in image analysis for agricultural applications, Derek has worked with a range of camera platforms including drones, tractors and smartphones to enable machine monitoring in typically labour-intensive applications across the cotton, grains and livestock industries. His current research focuses heavily on tapping into the potential of smartphone sensing for crop scouting on-farm.

Derek brings his experience in industry innovation to USQ’s students studying the Bachelor of Agricultural Technology and Management, He also enjoys introducing machine vision to school students, and has been running hands-on machine vision workshops for schools in the Toowoomba area since 2016.
