Reflection: Sculpture – Creative Creature

BAT | DOG | GIRAFFE

We had this pet when I was young, rescued by my mother because she was the runt of the litter.

She was a brown and cream miniature fox terrier, and we named her Cuddles.

As she grew, Cuddles transformed into the most delightfully hideous creature. Her legs stretched too long for her body, her ears were oversized for her head, and her teeth jutted out like upside-down fangs. She was a lovable oddball, equal parts bat, dog, and giraffe.

For this soft sculpture exercise, I’ve decided to recreate my beloved childhood pet and capture her quirky charm in fabric form.

Inspiration: Santorini

My inspiration for Ceramics Module 1 is drawn from memories of Santorini, where I spent the whole of last October with my partner, soaking in the rhythm of Greek island life.

Soon after we returned, my partner was diagnosed with a serious health condition and underwent a quadruple bypass. His road to recovery didn’t include me—but I hold on to the photos he took, now hanging on my wall, as reminders of happier times. They speak to how life, like the ocean, can be ever-changing and as fleeting as water.

Exercise One explores the beauty, movement, and colour of the Aegean Sea.

Reflection: Drawing

Eli (Graphite Pencil) was my favourite work produced during the drawing module of my university degree.

I worked on this artwork for over 10hrs, painstakingly trying to capture my son, Eli…and if I’m honest, it probably took that many bottles of red as well.

Reflection: Printmaking

I loved lino cutting and printing. It took me back to high school, where you just made a mess everywhere. Oh when you rolled that ink in the right way and pulled that paper off and you didn’t smudge or under ink, best feeling ever!

Reflection: Painting

My favourite medium! I felt my confidence lifting when I started this module. By giving me a framework to use, whether it was negative space, masking or inversion, I was able to just focus on what I wanted to communicate through my art.

I started very safely, with Loophole. Something personal, something that met the brief…but then I have started to look at artists such as Swoon, Banksy, Globus Collective and Mr Brainwash, and realised I didn’t need to be safe. Let the fun begin!
