Holding (syn. carrying, storing, keeping, belonging, grasping, clutching, gripping)
Holding hope, holding grief, holding self. The vessel holds; what it holds can be open for interpretation. Does it hold liquid or grief, tea, a baby, or hope? My vessels are made of clay embracing tactility and its age-old relationship to the connection to body and earth, returning my story to the universal story of life and death and our place within it.
This semester I explored this theme of holding. I explored my recent lived experience of having a hysterectomy and the emotional and physical weight of this procedure in this body of work.
I have been making functional work for the past 5 years with a couple of moments of exploring an arts practice. this semester I hoped to bring together both my functional practice with a more conceptual exploration.
