A few years ago we dug a new bore at my work place in Kleinton. The clay that came from the hole was lovely and plastic. It wasn’t that far from the old clay works so I thought it might be fun to see how this clay would behave. First I asked permission from our local Traditional Custodians, some of the clay deposits in this area were traditionally used in ceremony and are therefore sacred. I was told it was ok to use the clay. I made a small pinch pot, firing it to 1000 degrees C. It didn’t change much and was still very porous, even when I tried firing it to cone 9. I decided to use this clay as a slip on porcelain instead and see how it behaved – the results were great. I will continue with this process, first making cups for the fellas that gave me permission to use the clay – a small way to give back.
